Every dog is equipped with an amazing tool: their nose! Olfaction, the act or process of smelling, is a dog’s primary special sense. Dogs have more than 220 million olfactory receptors in their nose, while humans have only 5 million! Humans see much of their world using their eyes, Dogs see much of the world utilizing their nose. Teaching dogs to use their nose to identify a target odor offers many benefits. There are nationwide sports and competitions in K9 Nose work. It builds rapport and cooperation in our dogs; it is also makes for a relaxed dog working their vomeronasal organ and those nerves connected to their brain.
Medical tests have even shown that specially trained dogs are capable of using the dog’s sense of smell to detect certain types of tumors in humans. K9 nose Work is a highly recommended working activity for families to learn to work their family pets.
Not many family dogs will be used for bomb detection, competition or tracking work, but every family dog can learn to play Hide N Seek and find certain objects and odor hidden around the house. This K9 Nose Work activities can be used to help provide mental stimulation for your dog and provide a job to keep him active.
Beginners and all other skill levels are welcome.
